How Will You Start?

I watched the U.S. National Short Course Swimming Championships this past weekend. There were some amazing athletes in the races, particularly the men's 200 meter backstroke.  The race included the current NCAA champion, the three men with the world's fastest times for the event this year, and the favorite to win, Ryan Lochte.  Lochte is the defending Olympic champion and world record holder in the event.   Surprisingly, he didn't even threaten to win; he finished seventh.

What was the problem for Lochte?  A bad start.  At the starting horn, his feet slipped down the wall rather than launching him strongly over the water.  He came up a body length behind the field, and with that group, had no chance of recovering.

How we start has a huge impact on how we perform.  I know its the time of year when we long to wind down business activities. As the social calendar fills, I encourage you to invest time in planning the first 90 days of 2011.   Defining activities, prospecting goals, and marketing steps now will be the grip that you need to launch your business with power on January 2nd.   Line up the details for your first 90 days, and you will come out of the starting block well on track to meet your goals for 2011.
